Isla Mujeres – Cancun

We caught a ferry back to PDC, a bus to Cancun and then a ferry to Isla Mujeres, all in a couple of hours without a hitch. Mexico is so incredibly easy to get around with a really high quality bus system and great taxi drivers. Because of this it’s really felt like we’ve been on ‘holiday’ here without any stresses whatsoever. The Mexican people are delightful and speak very clear Spanish which we have found easy to understand. A lot of people also speak a little English so communication has been the easiest so far.

Isla Mujeres (pronounced ee-zla moo-hair-ees) was our penultimate destination in Mexico. It’s about 20 Minutes off the coast of Cancun and along with Cozumel one of the few places unaffected by the seaweed. We stayed in a cool little family run hotel, a five minute walk to Playa Norte, the best beach on the island. Aside from the great location and nice rooms, this hotel had an in house Chihuahua called Taco who took quite a liking to us. He always followed us upstairs for pats and would cry outside our room when we wouldn’t let him in haha. Chihuahuas in Mexico are not just a stereotype, they are everywhere and people love them a pets. There are even special pet seats on the ferries for them!

We went for swims each morning before it got too busy, had a local lunch out, an afternoon swim and made dinner each night in our small kitchenette (it’s amazing what you can do when you have a fridge and toaster). This island is a lot smaller than Cozumel and we walked everywhere, golf carts are also a popular mode of transport.

After three great days we boarded the ferry back to our final stop in Cancun. We booked in two nights at the Fiesta Party Hostel (what you can imagine it’s like is probably accurate). With free breakfast, dinner, beach trips, surfing lessons, and beer every night from 7-8pm it was a very good deal for $40NZD a night. The closest we could get to an all inclusive resort haha.

Tomorrow we fly to NEW YORK CITY and we can’t wait! It is also sad to be closing the South, Central and Mexico chapter of our trip. We have spent just over four months in Spanish speaking countries and just as we are getting a grip on how it all works we heading back into the western, English speaking world. Every country we have visited, Argentina, Chile, Peru, Bolivia, Panama, Costa Rica, Belize and Mexico I would recommend so highly for people to visit. Each country is so unique and each has welcomed us so proudly. This won’t be the last of our Spanish speaking adventures and we intend to take some formal Spanish classes when we return home. In regards to favourite places it’s so hard to choose as everywhere we’ve been has been incredible in its own way. Overall however, Argentina and Mexico have been firm stand outs due to nature, culture, people, FOOD omg, ease of transport and history.

The next leg of our journey starts in NYC tomorrow where we will spend five nights. From there we fly directly to London where we will then visit some of England, Scotland and Ireland over six weeks.

  1. Amazing Erin. This is the best way to travel – you will remember these experiences forever. Mexico has now been added to our bucket list.
Enjoy NY – it will be such a contrast.
